Eritrea wins the world mountain race 09/02/2012

Vallecamonic, Italy – Eritrean athlete Mamo Petro and Teklay Weldemariam raced to gold and silver medal glory at the 28th World Mountain Running Championships in the Italian Alps.

In 2010 Eritrea won the same competition in Kamnik, Slovenia during the 26th World Mountain Running Championships two years ago. Teklay Weldemariam came second behind Samson Gashazghi who won by 3 seconds.

This was the seventh time that World Mountain Running Championships – formerly Cup – have been held in Italy.

The uphill race is known to be a challenge with a really technical path and it could only proof to be the perfect terrain for Eritreans to compete among the world’s top mountain runners.

Athletes from more than 40 nations attended the competition . For the first time ever runners from Malta and Nigeria were announced at the start, whilst other nations came back into the Mountain Running family after a long absence, among them South Africa, San Marino, and Sweden.
