Yemen, Eritrea discuss fishermen security conditions

Yemen and Eritrea discussed here on Saturday the organization and security conditions of fishermen and the possible means to address them.

Interior Minister Abdul-Qader Qahtan reviewed with Eritrean ambassador to Yemen Musa Yasin situations of the Yemeni and Eritrean fishermen and the traditional fishing.

They also discussed the security coordination between Yemen and Eritrea as well as the conditions of the Eritrean community in the country.

The minister reviewed burdens and difficulties the government suffered from due to the illegal immigration from the Horn of Africa to the Yemeni coasts, expressing Ministry' willingness to provide more facilities for the Eritrean community and to make the arrangements to expel the illegal immigrant Eritrean to their country.

Four Eritrean cyclists will train at the World Cycling Centre’s African satellite in Potchefstroom, South Africa

From September 1st until the end of October, 16 athletes aged between 19 and 24 are training at the World Cycling Centre’s African satellite in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

This training camp provides the trainees with optimal conditions in which to prepare for the African Continental Championships, which will take place in Burkina Faso from November 7th to 11th, and for the beginning of the 2012-2013 UCI Africa Tour. A selection of the riders will be invited to a second training camp from January until March. Some will then travel to Switzerland, to train at the World Cycling Centre (WCC) in Aigle.

“The African World Cycling Centre satellite is a first and very important step for the athletes,” explains the Centre’s Director Jean-Pierre Van Zyl. “It is an interface between the National Federations and the Elite level of each African country and further down the line the WCC and the international level that we hope most of our trainees will reach.”

The current intake of trainees comes from seven different countries: Burkina Faso, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Namibia, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Seven new athletes are in the group: three Ethiopians and four Eritreans. The others have already trained at least once at the Potchefstroom centre. They include Namibia’s Till Drobisch, who will return to Africa mid-September, at the end of his first stay at the WCC in Aigle and his participation in the UCI Road World Championships Under-23. The group of 16 trainees could increase to 20 in the next few days, depending on discussions with the National Federations.

Since 2005, the WCC’s African satellite has trained 435 athletes, including certain well-known figures who then joined the WCC in Europe and a professional team: Eritreans Daniel Teklehaimanot (pro with Orica-GreenEdge since the beginning of this year) and Natnael Berhane (signed for Team Europcar for 2013), and the Algerian Youcef Reguigui.

Chalice Gold Mines completes sale of Zara Gold project in Eritrea to China SFECO Group and ENAMCO for combined US$114M

By Chalice Gold Mines
Net cash balance of $82 million after tax with a focus on acquiring new projects

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX: CHN/TSX: CXN) is pleased to announce that it has today completed the sale of the Zara Gold Project in Eritrea to China SFECO Group for US$78 million plus a deferred payment of US$2 million upon commencement of commercial production at the Koka Gold Mine.

In addition, the Eritrean National Mining Corporation ("ENAMCO") has settled the remaining balance of US$29 million for its acquisition of a 30 per cent interest in the Zara Project (in addition to its 10 per cent free carried interest).

Chalice has received all funds and paid all applicable taxes due in Eritrea for both the SFECO transaction and the ENAMCO transaction. Chalice's current cash balance (at today's USD: AUD exchange rate) is $82 million, which equates to approximately 33 cents per share, putting the Company in an exceptionally strong position to embark on its next chapter of growth.

Chalice has, in addition to its experienced management and board of directors, retained independent expertise to assist in the assessment of potential opportunities. Drilling will also recommence in October, subject to weather conditions, at the Mogoraib North VMS Exploration Project in Eritrea.

Chalice's Executive Chairman, Tim Goyder, said the completion of the Zara transactions marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter of growth for the Company, with its cash balance of A$82 million putting it in a unique position to identify and secure quality new opportunities in the international resource sector.

"This is a time in the market when cash is king and opportunities abound," Mr Goyder said. "We are very pleased to have crystallised significant value for our shareholders from the successful completion of this transaction, and we are now looking forward to identifying and securing new projects that will define the next phase of growth for Chalice."

Eritrea wins the world mountain race 09/02/2012

Vallecamonic, Italy – Eritrean athlete Mamo Petro and Teklay Weldemariam raced to gold and silver medal glory at the 28th World Mountain Running Championships in the Italian Alps.

In 2010 Eritrea won the same competition in Kamnik, Slovenia during the 26th World Mountain Running Championships two years ago. Teklay Weldemariam came second behind Samson Gashazghi who won by 3 seconds.

This was the seventh time that World Mountain Running Championships – formerly Cup – have been held in Italy.

The uphill race is known to be a challenge with a really technical path and it could only proof to be the perfect terrain for Eritreans to compete among the world’s top mountain runners.

Athletes from more than 40 nations attended the competition . For the first time ever runners from Malta and Nigeria were announced at the start, whilst other nations came back into the Mountain Running family after a long absence, among them South Africa, San Marino, and Sweden.

Security Council Welcomes Sudan-South Sudan Pacts As 'Breakthrough' for Peace

The Security Council today lauded the agreements reached by the leaders of Sudan and South Sudan in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Thursday as a "major breakthrough" for peace.

"The members of the Council warmly congratulate the leaders and negotiators on both sides for demonstrating courageous leadership to find durable solutions to the challenging disputes that divided them," said a statement read out to the press by Ambassador Peter Wittig of Germany, which holds the Council's rotating presidency for this month.

"These agreements represent a major breakthrough for the establishment of peace, stability and prosperity in both Sudan and South Sudan and give cause for genuine hope that the peoples of these two countries will realize the fruits of lasting peace and friendship."

South Sudan became independent from Sudan in July last year, six years after the signing of the peace agreement that ended decades of warfare between the north and the south. However, the peace between the two countries has been threatened in recent months by armed clashes along their common border and outstanding post-independence issues that have yet to be resolved.

The talks, held under the auspices of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel, were designed to enable the two nations to fulfil their obligations under a so-called roadmap aimed at easing tensions, facilitating the resumption of negotiations on post-secession relations and normalizing the relations between the two countries.

The Council underlined the importance of the immediate and full implementation of the agreements as well as the need to continue working with relevant parties to resolve outstanding issues, such as the final status of the Abyei territory and disputed and claimed areas.

They also reiterated their grave concern about the worsening humanitarian situation the states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile in Sudan, and urged the Government to expedite the unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to the affected civilian populations as rapidly as possible.

The two states, which lie on the border with South Sudan, have been beset by fighting between Sudanese forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) since last year. The SPLM-N was previously part of the rebel movement that fought for the independence of South Sudan.

The Council strongly urged the Sudanese Government and the SPLM-N to engage in direct talks to agree to and implement a cessation of hostilities and create a conducive environment for further progress on political and security issues.

Sudan’s NCP welcomes Eritrean initiative with SPLM-N rebels

By SudanTribune
August 31, 2012 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) said Eritrea launched an initiative to bridge the gaps between the government and members of the rebel Sudan people’s Liberation Movement –North (SPLM-N) who are inside the country.

Badr El-Din Ahmed Ibrahim, NCP spokesperson, did not elaborate on the capacity of those rebels who described as "parts of the SPLM-N inside the Sudan", but the announcement is the first confirmation of an Eritrean initiative in this regard.

The local press raised the issue of the Eritrean mediation on 18 August saying Sudan’s defence minister Abdel Rahim Hussein was in Asmara to discuss this initiative with the Eritrean president Isaias Afewerki. The SPLM-N chairman Malik Agar and the secretary general Yasir Arman reportedly had been there before him.

But the Abdel-Rahim denied the report saying he just briefed Afewerki about the talks in Addis Ababa without elaboration.

Badr El-Din told SMC, a news service sponsored by the Sudanese intelligence and security agency, that his party welcomes the Eritrean initiative pointing out that the Eritrean government should take into account the positions of Sudanese government on the different issues.

He said his party has a number of demands like changing the name of SPLM-N, disarmament of rebel combatants and changing the leadership of negotiating team, alluding to Yasir Arman.

The NCP official did explain the links between the Eritrean efforts and the talks held in Addis.

Sudan last month said it accepted the stipulations of the resolution 2046 which says that the talks should be based on a framework agreement signed by the Sudanese government and the SPLM-N in June 2011, but rejected by the Sudanese president in July.

The SPLM-N says they refuse talks with Khartoum on issues related to their regions (Blue Nile and South Kordofan) and demand to extend the talks to include Darfur and other issues.

The rebel group demands, further, to release its members detained by the Sudanese authorities and to reinstate its chairman in his position of Blue Nile governor.
